Tails and Trails

It is such a joy to have Artemis and Spartan join us here at Starfire Horse rescue. But I must say, it was no easy feat! We were ask to take them to alleviate strain within a fast growing herd, and with an additional male, the problem would have grown exponentially. And the land was just not sufficient for a foal. They have never been handled and were both foaled in the very place we removed them from. It was our pleasure to help in whatever little way we could. We made a fair view visits to see them both, simply connecting with them. The little foal, thought to be a yearling, was far more curious, and soon loved the game of targeting through positive reinforcement. Mum, was still stand offish. We really had no idea how we were going to trailer them, but we remained focused on connecting with them, allowing them to get to know us more on a regular basis. the owners manged to separate them from the herd into a smaller field, though I say small loosely as it was still a fairly extensive field. Once again, the person who helped us move Bird, was so eager to help again, which we were so grateful for and still extend that gratitude as in all honesty, we would never have managed it otherwise. For on the day, she also brought reinforcement. So there we were, a wonderful force of 8, working together to lead the Shetlands onto a trailer. My partner, nearly, single headedly, managed to guide them to a secure area, but we did not think the plan through and as I approached from the rear to shut the gate, we actually secured the gate. So it was all chaos from then on. But with determination, gentle guiding, bucket of food, and some other wonderful ideas, without causing too much stress, both mare and her yearling ran into the trailer. It wasn’t easy, but together we managed.

It was a very calm journey to their new forever home here at our horse rescue. We had the pleasure of being able to name them. so please welcome Artemis and her little one, Spartan to the family. We have no idea how old Artemis is, but Spartan may be reaching a year. Despite never having been handled or had much, if any human contact, they are so willing to approach us. So far, it is a lot of laying down and allowing them to inspect, have a sniff, and retreat at their own time and space. Artemis sets her own boundaries very clearly and gradually, that boundary has grown a little smaller. It will be slow progress, but you cannot rush trust and mutual respect. Spartan is enjoying his targeting games and has even learned the cue walk. Above all else, we will be sure to make it a light hearted journey building trust and connection.

There are some more adventures to share about Artemis and Spartan, but that shall have to wait for another day in another blog post.
